Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Online and In-Person Therapy in Pennsylvania and Delaware, for adults seeking relief from Trauma

Life is quite the experience.

If you’ve made it here to this page, you may be wondering if there is a name for some of what you’ve experienced in life. Perhaps events have occurred that you couldn’t quite figure out and now see as trauma.

Whether your experience was a one-time incident, such as a serious accident or sudden loss, or the ongoing impact of abuse, neglect or something else you can’t define, trauma always leaves a mark.

The way you figure out how to move through the world, along with how you react and respond in certain situations and relate to others, can often be traced to trauma, no matter how big or small you think it might be. Your brain processes experiences in ways that are meant to help keep you safe - but those ways can often show up as creating other issues. Traumatic experiences can create unconscious habits that leave you and so many other people feeling isolated, out of control, confused, powerless and helpless.

You may have also chosen a profession that inherently comes with a side of extra stress. If you’re a first responder, you deserve the support and help to unpack the trauma you’ve encountered - and will continue to encounter - in the process of your job. Using ART to do this can be an incredible way to regain the footing you may feel like you’ve lost in life. If you’re interested in learning more about how ART supports people who deal with trauma in the course of their careers, click here to read more about research on the military’s use of ART with active duty personnel and veterans.

When trauma happens, it can show up looking like not feeling safe or struggling to trust yourself or other people, upsetting memories that randomly pop up, getting stuck on thinking about topics you’d rather not think about, feeling shame and taking on responsibility for things that aren’t your fault, physical changes like chronic pain, emotional instability - especially with anxiety, fear, grief and depression - and so much more. It can also show up in your relationships, seriously mess with your sleep, and leave you feeling jumpy and on edge all the time.

If you’ve ever thought about whether or not it’s possible to feel differently, but got yourself to the point of being convinced that it’s not realistic… I’d like to offer you a bit of hope.

It IS possible to feel better.

You can feel safe again - especially with yourself. Your relationships and connections to yourself and others can shift, you can feel empowered and in control of your life, and get the relief you need so you can finally breathe again. Peace can be a new, and regular, feeling. You can get to the point of being able to drive past a location where something happened, or watch a tv show you used to avoid, or even have the anniversary of an event pass and not feel like you’re going to come unglued.

Trauma doesn’t have to define you - it’s only one part of your story.

It’s never been the entirety of who you are.

Let me tell you about Accelerated Resolution Therapy.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy, otherwise known as ART, is a proven method to resolve trauma, depression, grief, and other mental health issues within one to five sessions.

It’s based on decades of research about the use of eye movement in teaching the brain how to create new associations. Today, ART is an evidenced based practice that helps to resolve trauma by allowing voluntary changes in a client’s mind, by practicing visualizing the event or issues while moving their eyes from side to side. This is similar to what happens when people dream. How cool is that!

When you come to an Accelerated Resolution Therapy session, trust your brain to show you what you need to do. You do not have to talk about the problem or share details you’re not comfortable sharing. ART doesn’t replace the facts of the event and it won’t control how others behave - it is only meant to help you shift the emotions you associate with the event or issue you’re working through.

During the ART session, physical sensations, along with images, will be processed with the help of calming eye movements. Physical and emotional sensations that feel disturbing or uncomfortable can be reduced or eliminated, while enhancing positive emotions and sensations. Once you’ve used ART to replace those negative images or sensations with positive ones, the triggers you’ve been experiencing will also be gone. That means you get to keep the facts - but those alarm bells that have always sounded, telling you to find safety? They’ll finally be quiet.

Trauma is like shaking a snow globe, as hard as you can - ART is putting that snow globe down, letting it rest, and watching it finally settle.

The coolest part of Accelerated Resolution Therapy is finally having the possibility of getting relief from your traumatic experience, without having to share it in words! It’s completely normal to have a lot of fear about coming into therapy to work on managing and resolving trauma, and so many people really - like REALLY - don’t want to talk about it all over again. There’s different parts of the ART process that can support you in the things you need, so that the whole process can really be tailored to what makes you feel the most comfortable.

Clients often come back to me for follow up sessions after a session of ART, and talk about feeling less anxious while being better able to deal with different situations without freaking out like they would have in the past. They feel empowered and able to focus on other areas of their life. Sometimes they find another issue or thought that might come up and we’ll end up doing another ART session.

Don’t you think you deserve that kind of relief?

I sure do, and I can’t wait to help you go grab it. Reach out and schedule today!

  • Everyone! When you’re considering ART as an option for therapy, it’s important to make sure you’re motivated, able to hold onto a thought in your mind, and also able to move your eyes from side to side without issue.

ART can also be particularly helpful if traditional talk therapy hasn’t gotten you as far as you’d like. ART can be used as an adjunctive therapy, which means you can come for an ART session while also working with other therapists.

Pregnancy and certain medical conditions should be treated as special circumstances when you’re exploring whether or not ART is a good option for you.
